Health and Biosecurity Concerns to Improve Beef Cattle Reproduction

چکیده

Maintaining the health of animals in a beef breeding herd is critical to insure optimum herd productivity since the major contributor to overall herd performance is the reproductive rate. Because of this level of importance, it is essential to carefully monitor all aspects of herd reproduction on a production year basis in order to monitor each year’s production and make good management decisions. Since reproduction is the basis of herd productivity, the effects of suboptimal health or disease is the primary cause of reduced performance. We should define “disease” as any deviation from normal in an individual animal. This includes non-infectious and infectious causes of disease. Physical injury, management or environmental stress, toxic agents or nutrient deficiencies alone or in combination with infectious agents can contribute to disease and, in turn, reduce reproductive performance. The risk of introducing infectious diseases into a herd can be reduced by following good management practices. The term “biosecurity” has recently been used to address the areas related to disease prevention, containment, and control within a herd.

The Impact of Disease Nutrition and Management on the Beef Production Chain

Animal health and nutrition can have significant impacts on beef cattle herds. If the nutrition, health or husbandry of the herd is compromised there will be adverse consequences with accompanying economic losses. The number one health concern in beef cattle production is respiratory disease commonly referred to as BRD or Bovine respiratory disease. The number one production concern for cow cal...

Proceedings, Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle September 11 and 12, 2007, Billings, Montana CONTROL OF INFECTIOUS REPRODUCTIVE DISEASE: THE ROLE OF BIOSECURITY

Many conditions affect the reproductive health of the beef herd, including nutrition, bull fertility, and environmental stresses. Perhaps none have the potential to create more significant losses than infectious diseases. Infectious diseases affecting reproduction can create losses all throughout the reproductive cycle by decreasing ovulation rates, fertilization rates, embryonic survival rates...

Bayesian inference of genetic parameters for reproductive traits in Sistani native cows using Gibbs sampling

This study was undertaken to estimate the genetic parameters for some reproduction traits in Sistani beef cattle. The data set consisted of 1489 records of number of insemination, calving, and insemination dates in different calving was used. Reproduction traits including calving interval (CI), gestation length (GL), days open (DO), calving to first service (CTFS), first service to conception (...

Bill E. Kunkle Interdisciplinary Beef Symposium: Practical developments in managing animal welfare in beef cattle: what does the future hold?

Interest in the welfare of cattle in the beef industry has intensified over time because of ethical concerns and varying societal perceptions that exist about the treatment and living conditions of farm animals. The definition of welfare will vary according to an individual's philosophies (how one defines and prioritizes what is "good"), experiences (societal and cultural influences of animal r...

The Challenges to Improve Farm Animal Welfare in the United Kingdom by Reducing Disease Incidence with Greater Veterinary Involvement on Farm

The Cattle Health and Welfare Group of Great Britain report (CHAWG; 2012) lists the most important cattle diseases and disorders but fails to fully acknowledge the importance of animal mental health and; in so doing; misses the opportunity to further promote animal welfare. There are effective prevention regimens; including vaccination; husbandry and management strategies for all ten listed ani...
